Hi Roger,
I think you can live on a thousand a month if you are careful. I lived there for fifteen months and we had a big house for 850 a month and if you are single you wouldn't need that. The food is reasonable, dinner out can be under ten dollars. You can take a taxi or a bus places, If you have a simple lifestyle, and love to walk and sit in the plaza and get to know people, and join the Lake Chapala society you will find much to do and you can volunteer and find people with like interests. It is a gentle place, the people are nice, the weather near perfect. I left because my husband died, but he said that the year we were there was the best of his life. He loved to walk to the little market each morning for warm bread and maybe a papaya and a couple of eggs. I think especially for him, who had a very exciting life as I did, it was so nice to slow down, take it easy, watch the people in the park and not have to please anyone unless he wanted to. Try it, rent a place, you don't need to buy. You can get insurance after a couple of years, but I think it might be good to have a place to go where medicare pays for stuff.
The ordinary doctors are thirty dollars an appt and even come to the house. The veterinarians are fabulous, I would recomend it to anyone who is considering a change. We went down for ten days to see if we liked it and did and then went home to New Hampshire, sold our house, took off with our animals and lived very nicely. Good luck to you. Give it a try.

Hi All; This all sounds like what I have been looking for. Could some one communicate with me to answer some further questions.I live on Social Security Disability Insurance,is it possible for me to live decently comfortable on around $1000.00 a month. Not at all wanting anything austentatious, just the minimum. I live very simply, and am a very content person, a simple pleasures type guy. I just want to find someplace cheaper as it is daily becoming more difficult for me here financially, plus I think times are really gonna get bad/worse here in the USA. Appreciate any replies, or hit me up at rogmaris60@hotmail.com. Thanks Roger
