As a gringo trying to decide which country to retire to, Costa Rica or Panama, I have enjoyed this debate and I agree that the people of CR are very friendly, but I have to say the articles written for this series seemed biased to me. I have examined both countries extensively and while there are numerous things to like about both exceptional places, so far Panama has the edge over Costa Rica... for me. This is my opinion only, but I feel pretty strongly, all things considered, to this point it's Panama, this may change but to be honest the incentives for pensioners/retirees is a huge plus for Panama. This is my unsolicited heartfelt opinion

After reading the article, I find it difficult to understand why you gave this round to Costa Rica. In spite of any missing activities (such as diving in CR), your lists seem to point clearly to Panama as the winner in the Things to Do category. You might want to take another look at your own words.

Probably as I said before, he is just a Tico disguised as a gringo trying to make Panama look back because they are feeling the pressure our country is putting on theirs.

hey i read all of your articles, and i have to say they are both great countries, but be real, costa rica won the climate round, which is true, about the people, the tie is absolutley correct because it doesnt depend on what you think, but on peoples opinion on what type of people they like to be surrounded by!! but things to do?? come on are you kidding me, to begin you left out almost the best things about panama which will take too long to talk about, but to me that was not fair it seems that you gave it to cr because of the reasons many have posted before.

people find out for yourselves which country is more conveniente for you!!!!

Hello, Hola,
Would love any information as to where is best to retire and why? We are looking for a more private nice home that we could maybe spend 6 months of the year..
How is the medical system in CR and Pan.? How are the bugs, etc?
Where is it better cost of living wise? Rentals, which is your best for your buck? Panama or Costa Rica? All information welcome!
Thank you.
Muchas Gracias!

My family is planning a escape - we have two teenagers who love the rainforest, animals, riding quadrunners, snorkeling. We would ideally like to rent a home there as we may be joined by another family. Any suggestions would be appreciated and thank you!

I love Costa Rica and all, but could you explain the superior infrastructure deal a little better? There seems to be a typo. I don’t think you really mean Costa Rica’s infrastructure is better than Panama’s.

I personally have a hard time when choosing between Panama and Costa Rica. I've written many blogs comparing the two countries, but I really liked the various categories into which you broke down the comparison. I live in both places and travel back and forth constantly. I find myself favoring Costa Rica for some things and Panama for others. There are unfortunately times when I don't care for either country, and times when I am in love with both. I think it's easier to start a business in Costa Rica but better to live or retire in Panama (at this minute), but things change with each new administration. Costa Rica has a LOT more going for it in terms of tourism and a head start on protecting its national parks, but Panama is years ahead in commerce. If the two neighbors would only learn from each other, rather than the xenophobic approach reflected in some of the comments here. One can only hope!
